What is Toprakkale Castle?
Toprakkale, “the Earth Castle”, is the dark fortress you see from the motorway where the roads from Adana, Osmaniye and İskenderun meet. It sits on a basalt outcrop rising from the plain, and its walls and round towers are built of the same black stone. For travellers it has long marked the moment the road leaves the Çukurova plain and turns towards the Amanos passes and Syria.
The castle is not yet a fully developed visitor site. Excavations began in 2022, were stopped by the February 2023 earthquakes and resumed in September 2025 under the Osmaniye Museum Directorate and Osmaniye Korkut Ata University, as part of the ministry’s Heritage for the Future project. The finds so far include architectural elements going back to the 3rd century BC, a previously unrecorded cistern, a room holding more than 60 arrowheads, a bronze cauldron and a cannonball. Authorities have said they plan to open the fortress to visitors once the work is finished.
Until then, you can see the walls and towers from the road and the foot of the hill, but you should not count on access to the interior.

When is the best time to visit Toprakkale Castle?
Spring and autumn. The basalt soaks up the heat and the hill has no shade, so summer afternoons are punishing. Because excavation is active, ask at the Osmaniye Museum Directorate or the district before you go if you hope to see inside.
What is the history of Toprakkale Castle?
The 2002 inventory dates the castle to the reign of the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid, and describes it as built on a mound, almost rectangular in plan, surrounded by outer walls with a total of 12 towers. North of it, on the Adana road, are the remains of the old town of Kınık (Öranşar).
Recent excavation suggests the hill was occupied long before: the site is now dated back to the early 2nd millennium BC, and the excavators have found architectural pieces of the 3rd century BC. The fortress was rebuilt in the Abbasid period in the 8th century. In the 12th century it changed hands repeatedly between the Byzantines, the Crusaders and the Armenians of Cilicia. The Mamluks took it briefly in 1266 and held it permanently from 1337, and the Ottomans captured it in the 1490s as they conquered Cilicia. Its last major builders were the Mamluks.
What is Toprakkale Castle famous for?
- Its position. It guards the meeting point of the routes to Adana, the Amanos passes and İskenderun.
- Black basalt. The dark stone gives it a look unlike the limestone castles of the Taurus.
- Layered history. Abbasid, Byzantine, Crusader, Armenian, Mamluk and Ottoman phases on one hill.
- New finds. The armoury room with its arrowheads and the bronze cauldron shown in 2026 at the Cebelibereket Cultural Centre in Osmaniye.
What can you see at Toprakkale Castle?
The main enclosure. A nearly rectangular complex on the basalt outcrop, with round towers and arrow slits.
The second wall. An extra fortified wall runs along the south and east sides.
The outer ward. A curving outer wall encloses a large area roughly 100 m from the foot of the outcrop.
The excavation finds. In 2026 the finds were shown in a special exhibition at the Cebelibereket Cultural Centre in Osmaniye, including the bronze cauldron and Eastern Mediterranean “Al Mina” type pottery.
Other castles nearby. Osmaniye has several more: Hemite on the Ceyhan, Savranda in the hills to the east and the castle at Hierapolis-Kastabala.
