What is Ahi Evran Mosque and Tomb?
The Ahi Evran Mosque and Tomb is a small complex in the centre of Kırşehir that holds the grave of Ahi Evran, the 13th-century leather-worker who founded Ahilik, the brotherhood of craftsmen and traders that shaped working life in Anatolian towns for centuries. Under the Ottomans it became the spiritual centre of Türkiye’s tanners and craftsmen, and it is still the place Turks most associate with the Ahi tradition.
The complex is modest in size. Its interest lies in what it stands for and in the unusual arrangement noted in the 2002 inventory: the tomb is reached by a staircase from inside the mosque.
How do you get to Ahi Evran Mosque and Tomb?
The complex is in the Ahi Evran quarter of Kırşehir city centre, within walking distance of the Cacabey Madrasa and the main square. Kırşehir is reached by intercity bus from Ankara, Nevşehir and Kayseri; the nearest airport is Nevşehir Kapadokya.

When is the best time to visit Ahi Evran Mosque and Tomb?
Visit outside prayer times, and avoid Friday midday. The most meaningful time is during the Ahilik Culture Week and Tradesmen’s Festival, which the 2002 inventory places in the second week of October; it brings ceremonies, tradesmen’s delegations and visitors from across Türkiye. Check current dates before planning around it. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for walking the city.
What is the history of Ahi Evran Mosque and Tomb?
Ahi Evran was a tanner by trade. The organisation he founded spread across the Seljuk and Ottoman lands and, according to the provincial culture and tourism directorate, had an important influence in the founding period of the Ottoman state.
The complex grew in stages. The directorate dates its beginnings to the 14th century, when it is thought to have been founded as a simple lodge (zaviye). In 1450 a building was raised over the tomb, and in 1481 this was enlarged. In 1561 a prayer hall (mescit) was added, and the minaret was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The 2002 inventory dates the mosque and tomb, built in the name of the founder of the Ahi organisation, to 1482, which matches the enlargement of the late 15th century.
Under the Ottoman Empire, the directorate notes, the complex became the spiritual centre of Turkish tanners and craftsmen.
What is Ahi Evran Mosque and Tomb famous for?
Ahilik. The directorate describes Ahilik as an institution of craft, trade, solidarity and mutual help that developed and spread among the Turks. It defended business ethics and protected both capital and the worker’s labour, rested on reason, morality, knowledge and work, and had features similar to co-operatives, trade unions, social security and quality and price control. When a journeyman became a master, a ceremonial belt (şed) was tied on him.
A rule of life. The word ahi means generous, hospitable, brotherly and brave. Ahi Evran’s principle, as the directorate quotes it, was to keep your hand, your table and your door open, and your tongue, your eyes and your waist bound: be generous, and be discreet and honest.
The tradesmen’s festival. The Ahilik week held in Kırşehir every autumn honours this heritage.
What can you see at Ahi Evran Mosque and Tomb?
The mosque. A prayer hall built up over several centuries, from the 15th-century core to the 16th-century mescit and the 20th-century minaret.
The tomb. The inventory notes that the tomb is reached by a staircase from inside the mosque. Ahi Evran’s grave is the focus of visits; many visitors are tradespeople who come to pay their respects.
The quarter. The surrounding neighbourhood bears Ahi Evran’s name. Combine the visit with the Cacabey Madrasa and the Kırşehir Museum, which displays documents related to Ahilik.
