  • Where: City centre of Kahramanmaraş (Dulkadiroğlu district), Kahramanmaraş province.
  • Status: Damaged in the February 2023 earthquakes; restored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Kahramanmaraş Metropolitan Municipality and reopened on 16 September 2026.

What is Kahramanmaraş Castle?

Kahramanmaraş Castle stands on a mound in the centre of the city, its walls visible from most of the streets around it. It is a roughly rectangular fortress, about 150 m north–south and 75 m east–west, with outer walls of cut stone and inner walls of rubble. People have built on this hill since at least the Iron Age, and it has been the strong point of Maraş under every power that held the city.

For local people the castle is also a symbol of the War of Independence. In the winter of 1919–20 the city rose against the French occupation, and the people of Maraş remember the struggle over the flag on the castle as the spark of that resistance. The French withdrew in February 1920, and the city later received the title “Kahraman” (Heroic).

The castle was damaged in the earthquakes of 6 February 2023, which were centred in this province. It was restored stone by stone, with damaged sections dismantled and rebuilt in their original form, and reopened with a ceremony on 16 September 2026.

How do you get to Kahramanmaraş Castle?

The castle is in the city centre, within walking distance of the Ulu Mosque and the old market streets. Kahramanmaraş Airport (KCM) is about 5 km from the centre, with direct flights from Istanbul Airport, Sabiha Gökçen and Ankara. From the bus station, city buses and taxis reach the centre in minutes.

When is the best time to visit Kahramanmaraş Castle?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Summers are hot, though Kahramanmaraş is cooler than the southern coast; winters can be cold and wet. The late afternoon is a good time to walk the walls, when the light falls across the city towards Ahır Dağı. Because the site has only just reopened, check opening hours locally.

The anniversary of the city’s liberation is celebrated every year on 12 February, when the castle is a focus of the commemorations.

What is the history of Kahramanmaraş Castle?

The foundations of the castle are believed to date to the Late Hittite period, when Maraş, then called Marqasi, was the capital of the Neo-Hittite kingdom of Gurgum. It kept its strategic importance under the Assyrians and Persians. The Romans systematised its defences and the Byzantines fortified it, and in the early Middle Ages it changed hands many times between Byzantium and the Arab-Islamic states, as Maraş sat on their frontier.

The Seljuks repaired it in their own defensive style, and under the Dulkadirid emirate, whose centre was Maraş, it remained the administrative heart of the city. The Ottomans, who took Maraş in 1515, kept it in military use with regular repairs.

In 1961 the Kahramanmaraş Museum moved into a building in the castle, staying until it moved to its present home on Azerbaycan Bulvarı in 1975. After the earthquakes of 2023 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the metropolitan municipality restored the walls and stone surfaces, preparing new stone to match the original where pieces were lost, and laid new walking paths and visitor areas.
