What is Hoşap Castle?
Hoşap Castle (Hoşap Kalesi, also written Hoşab) is the stronghold of the Mahmudi beys, a Kurdish dynasty that held the mountain country southeast of Lake Van under Ottoman suzerainty. It sits on a steep rock spur above the village of Hoşap in the Van province district of Gürpınar, and it is the most complete castle of its kind in eastern Türkiye.
The setting does much of the work. The road from Van drops into the valley, crosses the Hoşap stream and the castle appears above it, its walls following the edge of the cliff. On the hill opposite, a line of mud-brick wall with towers runs over the ridge, the remains of the defences that once closed the town below.

How do you get to Hoşap Castle?
Hoşap lies on the main road from Van to Başkale and Hakkari, about 50–60 km southeast of Van city. By car the drive takes roughly an hour. Most visitors combine it with the Urartian site of Çavuştepe, which sits beside the same road between Van and Hoşap.
Van Ferit Melen Airport has direct flights from Istanbul and Ankara. Without a car, ask in Van about minibuses on the Başkale road, or book a driver or day tour from the city.

When is the best time to visit Hoşap Castle?
Late spring to early autumn, roughly May to October, is the comfortable window. Van sits at over 1,700 m and winters on the plateau are long and snowy. Summer days are warm but rarely oppressive at this altitude. Morning light falls on the entrance side of the castle; late afternoon is better for photographs of the walls on the facing hill.
What is the history of Hoşap Castle?
The rock was fortified long before the present walls. The Urartians, whose capital stood at Van, held the valley, and a medieval Armenian fortress later occupied the spur. Parts of the eastern walls and towers still follow the outline of that earlier castle.
Most of what stands today belongs to the Mahmudi beys. Sources date the main rebuilding to the 17th century under Sarı Süleyman Bey, who left his name on the castle; the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s summary places the work in the 16th century. The Mahmudi used the castle as their seat and as a toll point on the route between Van and the Hakkari mountains.
The mud-brick wall on the opposite hill enclosed the old town. It began where the castle’s cliffs end and ran up over the summit, so that castle and town wall together controlled the valley floor and the road.

What is Hoşap Castle famous for?
Its entrance. The gate is cut through a round tower and framed with carved stone, including lion reliefs and an inscription panel, and it is the image most people know of the castle. The second thing people remember is the scale of the setting: the castle on its rock, the stream below and the long mud-brick wall climbing the hill across the valley.
What can you see at Hoşap Castle?
- The gate tower: the decorated entrance on the village side, reached by a path and steps from the road.
- Inside the walls: the ministry lists two mosques, three baths, fountains and prison cells within the castle. Much is ruined, but the plan of rooms and courtyards is clear on the upper terraces.
- The views: from the upper walls you look down on the village, the stream and the Van–Başkale road.
- The town wall: the mud-brick wall with its towers on the facing hill, best seen from the castle itself.
Wear good shoes: the paths inside are uneven and there are long drops at the cliff edge with little or no railing. Opening hours can change during excavation and restoration work, so check locally before you go.
