- Where: Near Yıldırımtepe village, a few kilometres from Çıldır town, Çıldır district, Ardahan province.

What is Şeytan Castle?
Şeytan Castle is a small fortress built on the very edge of a rock spur above the Karaçay canyon, near Çıldır in Ardahan province. Its walls rise straight from the cliff, and below them the river has cut a deep, winding gorge through the volcanic rock. The setting, more than the masonry, is the reason to come: the castle and canyon together make one of the most dramatic views in northeastern Türkiye.
Its name means “Devil’s Castle”. The castle has a concealed entrance gate, and its position on a sheer rock made it almost impossible to attack. It has become one of the most visited places in Ardahan, alongside Lake Çıldır.
How do you get to Şeytan Castle?
According to the 2002 inventory, the castle stands in the Karaçay valley about 1.5 km northeast of Yıldırımtepe village, which is itself about 1 km from Çıldır. Drive or take a taxi from Çıldır town; the last stretch of road is rough, and you walk the final part to the viewpoints. Ardahan is about an hour away by road and Kars a little more. The nearest airport is Kars Harakani.
The provincial culture and tourism directorate reported in 2026 that restoration, new lighting, landscaping, a permanent service building and a car park were under way, so expect works on site.

When is the best time to visit Şeytan Castle?
June to September is easiest: the road is dry and the canyon is green. The castle is visited in winter too, when snow outlines the walls and the gorge, but the track and paths can be icy. Late afternoon light is best for photographs of the canyon. Combine it with Lake Çıldır, a short drive away.
What is the history of Şeytan Castle?
No inscription dates the castle. The 2002 inventory says it is thought to have been built in the Middle Ages. In 2024 the provincial directorate described it as probably Urartian, of the 9th–8th centuries BC, pointing to an architecture resembling Urartian castles, and listed the powers that later passed through the region: Persians, Macedonians and Seleucids, the kingdom of Armenia, Rome, the Parthians, the Sasanians and Byzantium. The truth may be that an early site was rebuilt in medieval times, as with many castles in the region.
What is clear is its role. The Kura and its tributaries form a natural route between the Caucasus and Anatolia, and the Ardahan inventory lists a chain of castles along them: Ardahan, Kinzi, Sevimli, Kalecik, Kurtkale and Şeytan Castle among them. Şeytan Castle is considered the most strongly fortified castle of the upper Kura region. In 2024 its administration was transferred from village jurisdiction to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and a restoration project followed.
What is Şeytan Castle famous for?
- Its position on a sheer spur above the Karaçay canyon.
- The hidden gate, which made it hard for attackers to find the way in.
- The canyon view, the most photographed scene in Ardahan.
- Climbing: the rock and canyon walls lie on a climbing route, and the castle is visited in every season.
What can you see at Şeytan Castle?
The walls. Stone walls and towers follow the edge of the rock, leaving almost no flat ground between the masonry and the drop.
The Karaçay canyon. The gorge winds below the castle in a series of bends. Viewpoints on the opposite rim give the classic view of the castle on its spur; keep well back from the edge, as there are few barriers.
Practical tips. Wear shoes with a good grip: the paths are uneven and loose underfoot, and in winter they are icy. Facilities were still limited in 2026 while the service building and car park were being built, so bring water and something to eat. The provincial culture and tourism director put annual interest in the castle and canyon at around 100,000 visitors in 2026, and summer weekends are the busiest time, so come early or on a weekday for a quieter visit.
Nearby sites. Lake Çıldır lies a short drive away. About 30 km south of Çıldır, at Taşköprü, a rock inscription attributed to the Urartian king Sarduri II (753–735 BC) is thought to be the oldest in the region. Northeast of Çıldır, on the Georgian border, are Kurtkale and, a kilometre east, the Övündü caves, two groups of dwellings carved into a limestone mass.
